Motorcycle Maintenance Schedule

Harley-Davidson Tech Working on Wheel

Once they’ve got a new bike they can be proud of, many Cape Girardeau bikers start wondering about their Harley-Davidson maintenance schedule. Every bike has a special maintenance schedule that will keep their bike in good shape and help to prevent major problems through regular inspections and small parts replacements. The service center at Lawless Harley-Davidson covers the ins and outs of motorcycle maintenance schedules below!

Harley-Davidson Maintenance: 1,000 Miles

It’s very crucial to schedule service at a Paducah, KY area service center for this 1,000-mile marker. Certified technicians will thoroughly inspect your bike and follow that up with a road test, confirming you can safely drive at top speeds. System inspections include:

  • Check clutch adjustment
  • Change engine oil & oil filter
  • Check/adjust the primary chain
  • Inspect brake pads and discs for wear
  • Inspect fuel valve, lines, and fittings for leaks
  • Check brake fluid reservoir levels and condition
  • Inspect exhaust system for leaks, cracks, and loose or missing fasteners or heat shields
  • Inspect exhaust system for leaks, cracks, and loose or missing fasteners or heat shields
  • Check the tightness of all critical fasteners: hand controls, brake system, axle nuts, front fork components, riser, and handlebars

Harley-Davidson Maintenance: 2,500 Miles

Once you hit 2,500 miles, some parts of your drivetrain and brake system will need checking so you can make sure your performance is up to snuff and you don’t need any fluid or parts changes.

  • Inspect transmission lubricant
  • Inspect brake pads and discs for wear
  • Inspect fuel valve, lines, and fittings for leaks
  • Inspect tire pressure and inspect the tread
  • Inspect operation of throttle and enrichener controls
  • Inspect operation of all electrical equipment and switches
  • Inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks

A Memphis, TN-area service center will also perform these tasks at the 7,500-mile marker.

Harley-Davidson Maintenance: 5,000 Miles

The 5,000-mile checkup includes many inspections from the 1,000 and 2,500-mile checkup. The additional inspections include parts of your electrical system. Here’s what to expect:

  • Inspect spark plugs
  • Check tire pressure and inspect the tread
  • Check wheel spoke tightness
  • Check and clean battery connections
  • Check front fork bearing adjustment
  • Check ignition timing (XL only) and vacuum hose
  • Check operation of all electrical equipment and switches

Harley-Davidson Maintenance: 10,000 Miles

Once you hit 10,000 miles, you’ll want to take your bike in for some extra lubrication and tightening of parts. These are important procedures that will keep your bike running smoothly:

  • Change transmission lubricant
  • Check and adjust the belt
  • Lube the speedometer cable
  • Lubricate and adjust steering head bearings
  • Check and adjust the operation of enrichener
  • Check stabilizer links and engine mounts

DIY Motorcycle Maintenance

You can also conduct essential motorcycle maintenance right from your Scott City garage! Here are a few things that you can do to keep your bike rolling down the highway with the optimal performance:

  • Clean battery terminals: taking care of corrosion problems and using a dielectric grease can make a serious difference.
  • Checking for blown fuses: you should also make sure you have spare fuses.
  • Checking battery terminals for voltage: use a multimeter to easily check the standing voltage on each battery terminal.
  • Check moving parts: the places where moving parts are and the “pivot points” on a bike can get worn out, so check them.
  • Check for fluids and fork seals: look under your bike for fluids and at the fork seals to see if any have failed.
