If you’re asking, “Do I need to wear a motorcycle helmet,” the answer is always a resounding, “Yes.” A helmet can mean the difference between life and death. Whether you’re from Cape Girardeau or Paducah, KY, it’s important to know the motorcycle helmet laws that apply to you. Lawless Harley-Davidson covers those laws below!

Motorcycle Helmet Laws in Missouri

Do I need to wear a motorcycle helmet in Missouri anymore? Scott City and Jonesboro, AR bikers may have heard about a new law that went into effect in August 2020 allowing cyclists over the age of 26 to legally ride a bike without a helmet — but you have to prove health insurance coverage. Additionally, those with learner’s permits can’t ride without a helmet, no matter what age.

Motorcycle Helmet Laws in Illinois

Do I need to wear a motorcycle helmet in Illinois? Here, it’s not illegal to ride without a helmet, but wearing one is still something we highly recommend. Drivers are required to protect their eyes with glasses, goggles, or a transparent shield. This includes ordinary eyepieces, goggles that protect the side of your face, and windshield.

Motorcycle Helmet Law in Ohio

Ohio requires you to wear a helmet under certain conditions: if you are under the age of 18, classified as a “novice” rider, or using a permit. But all Memphis, TN riders should get a helmet to lessen the harm of an accident. A novice rider is someone within their first year of using a motorcycle. You’re also required to have eye protection in the form of glasses or a windshield in Ohio.

Motorcycle Helmet Law in Tennessee

Marion, IL riders should know that Tennessee requires drivers and passengers on motorcycles to wear a helmet at all times when operating the vehicle. This has to meet federal standards, but any bike dealer or service center will have you covered on that front.

Motorcycle Helmet Tips

Not every state requires riders to have a motorcycle helmet by law, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) estimates that they are 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and 67 percent effective at preventing injury. Here are some more important guidelines:

  • Make sure your helmet is level with your forehead and just above your eyebrows.
  • Tighten your chin strap so that only a finger can slide through it.
  • Your helmet should not rock from side to side, but stay still and flat on your head during movement.
  • The side straps should form a “V” shape under your ears
